Detailed explanation

This tour is available only during the winter season, from December 15 to April 15. And it depends on the number of whales that are in Los Cabos at that time, so we ask you to send an email or message before, to request the current status.

The Cabo San Lucas Arch

Our first stop will be the iconic symbol of Los Cabos, the world-famous arch.

The arch is also called Finisterra or Lands’ End. It is the most distinctive rock formation in Los Cabos, it’s located in the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean.

This whole area has a special magic, and believe me, seeing it in photos is not the same as seeing it with your own eyes. It’s a mandatory stopping place for all marine excursions that depart from the Cabo San Lucas marina.

We will have time for our guests to take as many pictures as they would like.

History

Humpback Whale Watching In Cabo San LucasWhales have always sparked many stories and tales in humans since the beginning of time, such as the whale that swallowed Jonah in the bible and in the Moby Dick novel. They are impressive and interesting creatures.

Witness one of the longest journeys of one of the mammals, (yes, believe it or not they are mammals fully suited to aquatic life) the largest on earth.

Humpback whales migrate more than 18,000 kilometers from Alaska / Canada waters, seeking to get away from the intense cold of those places, they begin a very dangerous migration, roughly looking to perpetuate the species for another year.

They come to the Mexican coasts such as the waters of Baja California Sur, wanting to reproduce and have their babies.

The hatchlings are born in Mexico and the whales need to stay in these waters long enough for the babies to feed on their own so they can survive the dangerous journey back north.

In Mexico we protect the whales, we have never hunted them and we were one of the first countries in the world to create a protected natural area, the whales are at peace at this place called Ojo de Liebre

Whale watching

Whales can hold their breath for 15-30 minutes, so we will wait until a whale comes to the surface to breathe again. You have to be patient in the meantime, until they show up again. If there is any other whale around, we will get close to the other one.

However, there are some things to consider in order to cause less impact on the whale’s behavior.

  • You have to observe the whales from an acceptable distance, try not make them feel uncomfortable
  • There can be no more than 4 boats per whale
  • You can't make sudden speed changes or go faster than whales
  • If the whales avoid you, change their direction, their breathing rhythm or change their activity, do not approach and move away slowly.
  • The correct way to approach a whale is from the back, never from the front or surrounding them, as this can be threatening to them.
  • Swimming, snorkeling, diving, parasailing or kayaking are prohibited in the areas where the whales are, it can be dangerous and affect the natural behavior of these animals

All these decisions are made by the captain of the boat who is responsible for the group and who has specialized courses by the corresponding authority.

Humpback whales remain endangered - there are no more than 10,000 individuals worldwide, so we have to take care of them.

If we are lucky, we can observe humpback whales, gray whales, etc. The humpback whales are famous for their songs.

Marine life

The Sea of Cortez is rich in marine life, it is one of the preferred destinations for sport fishing, its waters are rich in nutrients, and contain countless marine species.

There are many possibilities, apart from the whales to see, such as.

  • Dolphins
  • Turtles
  • Sea lions
  • Manta rays

The tour lasts approximately 2 hours to 2 and a half hours.

Yes, whales sometimes get close because of their inquisitive behavior, but we are dealing with wild animals, so we cannot guarantee behaviors, only that we will be able to enjoy the beauty that whales and dolphins choose to share with us.

Prices

As explained above, the price is based on the kind of boat you want to go on, basically two types

Big Boat:

It has all services such as bathrooms, including breakfast and even an open bar

  • Pros: They are more spacious, comfortable and more stable, especially if the sea is rough. Being a bigger group, the price is cheaper
  • Cons: it's not a fast boat, the whales are not too close, and perhaps the objective of the excursion is lost due to other things to do on the boat
  • Adults Price (+12 years): $50 USD or $900 mexican pesos $46 euros per adult person
  • Price for Children (6-11 years old): $25 USD or $450 mexican pesos or $23 euros per child
Small Zodiac type boat:

They are fast boats, but do not have all the services

  • Pros: They are faster and agile to move from whale to whale, but being a smaller group, the price is more expensive
  • Cons: There are no toilets on board, if the sea is choppy it is possible water will splash you, the boat may have shade or not. Very young children are not allowed.

  • Children price (Check age restrictions): Small children are not allowed, it varies from operator to operator, please send an email with the children's ages, height and weight.

"We took the tour after doing some research and wanting one which felt more authentic. Our experience was good - the boat wasn’t too crowded and we saw whales. It was nice to see lands end, the beaches and we were lucky enough to see sea lions too. Thanks for an enjoyable afternoon"

"If your goal is to actually experience (and learn about) whales, small boat is the perfect choice! Our guide was so knowledgeable, teaching us about whale behaviors and answering all of our questions. It’s a small boat, so we were able to maneuver much closer to the whales than I’d ever been. We learned so much and had an amazing time! This is a MUST-DO experience for your bucket list!"

"This excursion is fantastic. It was the first day of the whale watching season. Mari was great, Excited energetic and very well informed about the wales. We were treated to upward of 40 or more breaches. So many we lost count. I know this is rare to see. But we had an amazing time!"

"the a marine biologist is super enthusiastic about the whales in this area and other areas of the world. She is knowledgeable and happy to share her perspectives and experiences. I would go again - maybe on a longer trip next time! Love that these guys are dedicated to the research and the science."

"My wife and I took two trips in late January and had a great time. We chose because we liked the small boat and the fact that they have a marine biologist on board. At one point on both trips they dropped a hydro-phone in the water so we could listen to the whales sing which was pretty cool. On one trip they even dropped a gopro in the water and we were able to watch one of the whales that swam next to our boat when the trip was over."

"Staff were responsive and knowledgeable, the boat was not crowded, the staff were very helpful (assisting my husband who is a wheelchair user into the boat and making sure he was comfortable) and it was very professionally run."

"The staff are marvelous, we felt totally safe and we were entertained by the whales, the tour went longer than we expected because of the generosity of the staff making sure we kept following the whales, until we were one of two boats left."

"Our cruise ship was late and we were able to reschedule our excursion through messenger. They were very accomadating and worked with us on a time. Turned out that this time was the best of the day. Many whales breaching. Very knowledgeable and the driver would get as close as possible. I would recommend to anyone and would not hesitate to go out with them again."
